50/50 #2 "Whimsy and Wonder"
Original artists statement that accompanied the piece at the 2nd annual 50/50 show at the Sanchez Art Center 7/30 to 8/29 2010.
Whimsy and Wonder
As anyone who knows me will tell you, I tend to work very dark in subject (not color). I took the Fifty-Fifty challenge as an opportunity to see if I could lighten things up a bit. I avoided getting dark until the very last piece. It was a lot harder then I anticipated—I really had to dig deep to find the light.
You will find a bit of a common theme in this work, and that theme is princess empowerment. My life partner has four wonderful granddaughters: Jacqui, Audrey, Danielle and Lauren. I love them all very much, and at least two of them are really into the whole princess experience. In fairy tales, princesses tend to be the proverbial hostage, waiting for the handsome prince to rescue them. I want my proud little princesses to know that they are fully realized and capable of taking care of themselves.
Thank You –Bill Gallo
