Artist's Statement

'Me my X and the little ones'
I have always been fascinated by both the human face and paint as an artistic medium. Both are expressive, and both can transcend the spoken word. Someone from an entirely different culture can often recognize the expression on your face without comprehending anything you are saying.
Much the same can be said about painting. I find paintings often affect me on a visceral level. I often “feel” a painting as much if not more than I see it. I paint in much the same way; I feel it in my gut. I choose a particular image to paint based on the impulse that it feels right. Only after looking back on my work can I actually begin to detect a commonality that enables me to attach a rational explanation behind my choice of subjects. They turn out to be either absurdly humorous or very beautiful to me and quite often both. I enjoy taking the absurd and elevating it to the level of introspection through paint. For myself painting is a means of taking things a little less seriously in a very serious way.
